Well, In my ignorance, blissful as it is, I have only heard that the diesel grade oil is a heavy duty oil and contains zinc which helps keep the flat tappet cams alive in contrast to the energy conserving oil that today's cars use. The EC oil drains off of surfaces too fast and is more prone to "dry starts". Zinc is not good for a catalytic converter and can cause failure of those. So if your non cat veh is a flat tappet cam, heavy duty oil might be in order. The diesel grade is just a lazy man's way out in the abundance of supply and the need not to look too far.
