I got my little Pomeranian three years ago--a stray who lived in the woods for about a month before the daughter captured her. Her first day here she peed on the floor. The next day I put down a pee pad by the back door and since that time she has not gone anywhere in the house--No. 1 or No. 2. I also let her out in the yard a lot, and she does her business out there the great majority of the time. If it's raining she uses the pad. The beautiful part is that when she needs to go in the night she wakes me up and I put her down off the bed and she goes to the pad. When she's done I boost her back up on the bed.
I can't take credit for training her to do this. I think it has more to do with the fact that I have hardwood floors in my house. Little girl dogs don't like to stand in their pee, so they look for a soft, absorbent surface--pee pad, grass or your carpet.
