Really? That's a lie the unions like to spread. If you go back and look either businesses implemented most of those changes to attract workers or they were passed by the government. Some the stuff passed by the government, like child labor laws, 40 hour week, child labor ECT it had absolutely nothing to do with taking care of the worker. Most were passed during high unemployment times as a means of making more jobs available.
Look at the math. If I can hire 2 people who I can work 60 hours a week and not pay overtime to I'm good. Now make me pay for that 20 hours each at time and a half. It's cheaper for me to hire a 3rd worker.
We are not the only country that has passed laws in an effort to create jobs. That's why some countries have gone to 30 hour weeks. Nothing to do with the people and everything to do with employment.
