The English Reformation during the 16th century effectively removed the Pope and his folks from influence with the English aristocracy and government. The Reformation was instigated by Henry VIII's desire to annul his marriage to Catherine so he could marry another woman and sire a male heir to the throne. Pope Clement VII refused Henry's request, which started a chain of events with the eventual result of Henry and his chosen Archbishop of Canterbury being excommunicated from the Catholic Church and the rise of the Church of England as the official church.
George III, England's king before and during the American Revolution, was Protestant, as were previous monarchs dating from the 1600's.
A section of the coronation oath (as passed by Parliament in 1688) states "Will You to the utmost of Your power Maintaine the Laws of God the true Profession of the Gospell and the Protestant Reformed Religion Established by Law? And will You Preserve unto the Bishops and Clergy of this Realme and to the Churches committed to their Charge all such Rights and Priviledges as by Law doe or shall appertaine unto them or any of them."
