A couple of months ago, my kid was driving the '98 Jeep and the alternator quit on a Saturday afternoon. It left him set on the side of the road. Triple AAA towed him to a Firestone shop because it was the only one open. I would have rescued him, but he was three hours away from me. Anyway, they threw on a new alternator and battery to the tune of almost $700. My kid and I were over a barrel, so we were at their mercy. The itemized bill shows that they charged $50 just to change the battery. JUST TO CHANGE THE BATTERY. There is nothing special about it. It can be done in under 5 minutes and they also broke the battery hold down clamp. The irony of this was that I had put on a new battery and alternator about a month before this and the new alternator had failed, so nothing that I could have done to foresee this coming. Stay away from Firestone.
