It didn't surprise me that Joe Paterno protected his defensive coordinator and by extension his football program; he had god-like stature here in PA and could get away with anything. When people referred to "Saint Joe" they weren't talking about religion. If a football player was caught committing a crime the local police knew that they weren't allowed to arrest him, just bring the culprit back to campus and turn him over to the coach.
But I don't understand why anyone protected this guy.
