Operation Ke, Japan's name for the evacuation of their troops on Guadalcanal began today in 1943. The Tokyo high command, after a year long, unbroken string of land victories across the western Pacific had finally met their match in the US Marines. The campaign ground up over 20,000 of their land troops, 30 irreplaceable ships, thousands of sailors and hundreds of their best pilots which would have lasting effects as the war progressed. This was the first time US ground troops had a chance to grapple with this undefeated foe. The campaign went on for 6 months and ground up 7000 Marines, an equal number of allied ships ships and sailors and hundreds of our pilots. This terrible battle of attrition - at the very farthest end of both side's supply lines turned the corner of the war and from here on out the Allies will hand the Japanese an unbroken string of defeats.
