When I was at my friends house one time in the 50's he showed me his battery powered tape recorder. I had never seen one before and I convinced him to let me take it home so I could record my family without them knowing about it. Come supper time I had the recorder in a hidden place and while we were eating supper I think I encouraged talking a little bit and my step-dad obliged by spicing up his normal salty talk and when we had finished I pulled out the recorder and played back the conversation and my mom jumped all over him for his foul language in front of me and my brother. Actually it was the way he normally talked but it sounded worse on the recording!
