I agree with most below. If you know where his family is and know that much about them, then find them and give him back his money . Explain to him that you realize the hardship of this time of year with a young family and that you understand if he got ahead of himself when putting money down on it. His pride is obviously standing in his way and his dream is that he will "somehow" still come up with the $$$$ Just bail him out, both with you and his family too. You will all be happier.
