You are correct that the USA accomplished the most to win the war with Japan, all the other major powers were concentrating on the war in Europe.
In Europe the Russians stopped the German advance at Kursk in the summer of 1943. That fact was never mentioned in any my grade school history classes but it is now considered the turning point of the war. The Western Allies D-Day invasion in June 1944 was as much about stopping the Russians from occupying all of Germany and continental Europe as it was about defeating the German Armies. The Yalta Conference in February 1945 pre-determined who would occupy which territories. Patton wanted to take Berlin before the Russians, but it would not have changed the all ready agreed upon post-war boundries, so Patton was not allowed to risk additional American losses just for his own bragging rights.
Read or Google about the Battle of Kursk, it is still the largest tank battle in history.
