I have a pit by the barn where pipes and a hydrant are, normally it works fine but air leaks in it with a strong south wind (with a building against it I've never been able to track down the wind eddy creating that and most years it doesn't matter) as the frost goes deeper the pipes in the bottom of that pit get sluggish, froze some mornings. House works fine, have to help a bit for the critters with a bucket of hot water. I have an energy free waterer that works well, but I don't have it adjusted right I've left the water level too high in it. A strong wind chill will freeze a skin over the top of it. So much ice around it I hate to chop it open to pull the tub out to adjust it, just tired of the cold and wind! All should improve soon with the stronger sun, but I see the forecast low is -2f again tonight.
Typical winter, it just gets long this time of year and we all complain around here!
If we knew each other better and sitting around with favorite beverages I'd suggest not bothering with a pipe issue if the wife is standing around waiting for a shower, but don't want to derail this thread or mean anything untoward....... :)

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
