Cub Axle

I'm looking for advice relative to a '55 Cub which I've owned for 2 weeks. The final drive axle (rear wheel spindle/hub) is longer on the right side than on the left side, the extra length shows up on the dust cap side of the casting. The left spindle castle nut is covered by a shallow 4 bolt flange dust cap. But the right spindle is so long that it protrudes through the dust cap, the dust cap holds an oil seal which seals against the body of an extra long castle nut.

Has anyone seen this before?
