We've always been able to pry the remnants of the old post out with the digging bar. These are split, sharpened 6' locust posts, by the way.
Once the old post is out of the way, the hole usually needs to be cleared/widened, again with the digging bar. New post is dropped into the hole and driven home with a 14lb post driving maul.
