In my neck of the woods the guys who plant cover crops use rye quite a bit for a cover but it isn't allowed to get very tall before it is terminated. The first time I was introduced to rye was combining wheat in Oklahoma. The stuff was as tall as the combine cab and smelled like burning belt when it went through. I got out of the combine and checked every belt because I could smell burning belt but the belts were OK. Then it dawned on me it was the smell of the rye. It was a dirty job cleaning the combine before we went into the next field so we didn't carry any rye seed along with us.
