I think your son just learned a valuable and costly lesson.
My first question would be, why was he buying a vehicle 3 hours from home? If you deal around your home area, you've undoubtedly already heard gossip about the various dealers and their sales practices. A dealer 3 hours away had absolutely nothing to lose, 'cause he knew your son likely would never be around his local area to spread the word about him.
That being said, after having myself spent time in the sales end of the automotive business, I've always been astounded at the people who just beg to be taken advantage of. People will spend a month doing research and doing their homework before they buy, say, a computer, but they'll spend 20 times that on a vehicle without even bothering to check it out thoroughly.
