Your changing the subject but oats are allelophathic they make a good winter cover crop you plant late in the fall you do not plant alfalfa with them the end result they will winter kill and will smother any weeds that try to grow in the spring .Simply put i used the chemicals in the oats as my spray the moisture in the mulch for moisture and they only tillage i did in the spring was the slot made by the no till planter conserving moisture and soil.Wisconsin university has done extensive research into rolling beans into standing winter wheat the timing is somewhat critical but it will be conserving ground building your soil and reducing the need for chemicals I'm not against using them but if there's a more cost effective and at the same time a better for the environment why not.
