Does it have good (acceptable) oil pressure at idle, at operating temperature?
If so, the bearings can be assumed to be within operating specs.
What kind of smoke are you experiencing?
Black smoke is from running too rich. Flooding carb, choke not opening fully, restricted air filter, main adjusted too rich.
White smoke, raw gas, eye burning, (really not smoke but unburned fuel) caused by improper ignition, switched plug wires, low compression.
White vapor, steam. Caused by coolant getting in cylinders, bad head gasket, cracked head.
Blue smoke, is oil smoke. Smoke under load is oil getting by the rings. Could be rings have not seated, wrong rings, improperly installed, damaged during installation.
Oil smoke at start up, idle, is valve guide leakage.
If you have ring leakage smoke, before going back in, some things to do:
Check the oil level, be sure it's not over full or contaminated with gas.
Use straight 30 weight oil for break in.
Be sure the crankcase vent is not restricted.
If engine is equipped for a thermostat, be sure it is there and working. Otherwise, restrict the radiator air flow to get the engine up to temperature, give it some running time under load to seat the rings.
But if the smoke is excessive, fouling plugs, doesn't improve, something is wrong. The engine will need to come back apart and see what is wrong.
