The problem I run into is scammers. I will get a slew of replies that originate in Nigeria. The scammers reply to an add, Then, if you bite, they send a check for more than you were asking, "to cover shipping". You then get an e-mail or text from the shipper asking you to wire them their money. The check you received though is drawn on a real account which does not belong to them. When the company gets their statement, they then reverse the charge, and you are left holding the bag. You still have your item since the shipper never left Nigeria. I advertise rooms for rent, but have also had replies from them for miscellaneous merchandise. It starts with a reply, Oh, I want your room, I am moving to your area from Guam, or some other distant place. Then they follow up with an e-mail that they had a family emergency, and will be flying to attend to it, usually some place outside the U.S. so their vehicle is going to be shipped to your location. Next you get a check for an amount larger than the rent you were asking, as I mentioned above, sent by their daddy. It will arrive Fed Ex in most cases. Then you get contacted by the shipper who wants payment before he brings the vehicle. I've never fallen for it, but they do their darnest to get you to believe. While I was laid up, I played their game. I got over a dozen checks which I turned over the the Feds. They pretty much confirmed that since the scammers were in Nigeria, they couldn't do anything even though the checks were mailed from inside the United States. The big tip off for me was they didn't ask any questions about the place. No request for photos, or what the neighbors were like, how far from town etc. It was also clear they were using British style rather than American.
