JD I completely agree. If you rent a store front that I own out it's at a set rate. Doesn't matter how big or small the profit is it's a set price for rent. Same thing with a farm field. The landlord has no right to a bonus because prices were good. If the agreement was 100 an acre that's what is paid. Now the next year the landlord may consider raising rents or at the end of a lease. The renter can always walk away.
Doesn't really matter what happened in the middle ages. That was then and this is now. Today the land owner can go either way. If I were to rent my land out I would demand cash rent. Take a little less than what could be made but insulated for poor markets, drought and other occurrences.
