I had an uncle that worked in a cotton gin back in 40's and early 50's. He told me that when they had a bale that was trying to burn they put it out with kerosene. He said water wouldn't penetrate the bale but the kerosene would soak in and reach the hot spot. I reckon it being packed it couldn't get enough air to flame up.I never heard of that before or after he told me so I don't know if it really worked. .

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
