The big engine tractors were mostly for show, but some did actually get some use. I would question how well the drive train would hold up.
But the side-by-side models were a serious effort for more power to the ground. As far as I know there were no large tractors on the market, other than steam, and some oddities like the oil pull tractors.
I suspect those were out of reach for the farmer trying to expand his production, so some got real creative with what was available and cheap!
