The odd part is that JD is the center of the target of most of these articles. Deere has one of the most open software setups of any non auto manufacturers. You can do most of the diagnostics directly from the cab display, you do need a troubleshooting manual and need to know how to read it.
They also sell a limited version of service advisor to customers that has all the diagnostic info, but no calibrations or software loading. Those are locked out due to the emissions laws of this great country.
That said, I do have software on a laptop that will do things Ford would frown upon.
And yes, Deere can shut your machinery down remotely. To my knowledge they do not do this in North America, but if you do not pay your bill in the Eastern Bloc, your tractor will not start.
