Sometimes the TA locks up. When they do that it will work in TA with lever pulled back provided that everything is still intact in the direct drive clutch. You can tell by removing that small cover over TA and manually release the TA direct drive clutch with any suitable means like pipe wrench. Lever was probably removed when TA started to act up with lever pulled and now the rollers on ramp are jammed tight against carrier. Carrier needs to turn in Direct Drive but remain stationary with lever pulled back into TA. Just another definite possibility with your problem.
If shift rails are broken you should be able to tell that by moving them back and forth with shift lever or when lever is off, with anything that will get ahold of the slots in rails. Bar, screwdriver etc.
