My headgate has a 1/4" chain bolted at one side. I throw the chain over the top of their head and hook it in a hook on the other side while the head is down. Gotta watch your fingers though - if they rear their head while you're hooking the chain you better have your fingers out of the way. My chain is a couple feet too long so I don't have to get my fingers in close to the hook. You could lose a finger if you failed to plan ahead.
