Regulators have a cut-out relay in them. That's what stops the reverse current when you shut off the engine or when the charging system current flow drops to zero amps. If it weren't for the reverse current relay also known as the cutout relay your battery would go dead when engine wasn't turnning the generator. Cutout relay means the relay opens and cuts out the generator when not charging. Now that you have a 3 brush generator you shouldn't need a regulator. You adjust the current or output of the generator by moving the adjustable brush closer to the other brush.
