I would guess it's the risk you take, to some degree. You certainly are no stranger in dealing with people, given your career, but every person and situation is different.
The perception I get is that among the communities of those who participate on this site and some others like it, is that most if not all are upstanding citizens. That could mislead a person though and some would take advantage of that perception.
The details of your deal, the person deciding a money order is a hassle, is a petty thing on their part, I still use money orders often as a way around another problem which is another story. They are no hassle to me at all.
Craigslist has been a wonderful resource and I've had a good experience buying and doing some selling over the years. I am cautious, considering the logistics of making a deal, paying in cash etc.
Earlier this year, was browsing CL in other areas and found a nice gem to go on my 640 ford tractor which was sold by our dealership at least twice, an original ford top link! It is in good condition, some rust on threads, patina on ends etc. Looks like it was not used much. It was seized, but easily freed up. I pursued the add, stating I'd pay the extra packing and shipping costs. Seller wanted me to use paypal, so I did. A couple simple e-mail exchanges and it arrived and it was like $30 total. Seller and buyer both are strangers to each other, but it worked out. Chance you take sometimes.
