I have always had rolls but I have been told the impellers work good also. My information was that they took less horsepower than the rolls but I could be wrong. Some of out timothy growers here trid impellers a few years back behind the knife cutting swathers. It worked well but most of timothy goes to export market and hay buyers didn't seem to like it as well. It seems like most of the horsepower required for a mower conditioneer is used in the rolls and if you have any slugs that is where it hangs up
