John, What I was trying to show is the effect of the chain angle on its load capacity. The 4040 lb is the front/rear force on an arbitrarily angled chain that will equal the 6600 lb WLL. Since there is no way to know the angle the chain will be applied to the load at, the WLL was arbitrarily cut in half by the regulation.
For the single chain through the drawbar, think of a rope and pulley, as in a block and tackle. You have a rope wrapped around a pulley, on each leg of the rope there is 500 lb pulling. The attaching point of the pulley has a force of 1000 lb on it. So you have 2x the force on the object as you do on the rope. The same principal applies to the chain that is hooked over/through the load. So the 50% WLL on two separate tie downs is equivalent to 100% WLL on a chain with both ends attached to the truck.
What I do not understand is the 50% derate of WLL for a chain that passes over/through the load and comes back to the same side of the truck.
