My sister and I were at her infant son's gravesite here in Illinois. He had died in 1986, at five days old, of hydrocephalus (enlarged head). He was born in Watertown SD and came home for a couple of days, where his two older sisters met him, they were 10 and under. Mom had trouble breastfeeding him, anyway they sent him then to Sioux Falls which was a much larger hospital. He died on Christmas Day. The doctor who was with him when died lent them his personal car to take the baby back to Illinois (they had a junky Jeep pickup). The baby was sealed in a tiny styrofoam casket, and the sisters would not stand for the baby to be in the trunk. He rode with them. I teared up when telling my wife the story. AND WHAT a doctor - compassion is the word I guess, along with love and kindness.
