I always cut the backswath first just to get a full cut and you wouldn't clog the sickle with hay by doing it the other way. Funny story on this cousin was helping me hay one year and i asked him did he know how to cut hay sure he knew city kid i should have known better. Anyway i started chores and just before milking i thought better check . There he was cutting driving on the standing hay going backwards around the field. It gets better after i straightened him out he said it's easier this way ! Funny thing not very visible from the road but everyone in the neighborhood knew about it the next day. Gave the hay to a neighbor to chop because so much had been run down he said it was the worst deal he got because it was so hard to chop.
