Way back when Dad was still mowing with horses, the backswath was left until the end. That gave the kid with the pitchfork plenty of time to clear the mowed hay away from the edge, so the mower wouldn’t pick any of it up and plug. I also had to “pitch off” the point rows in the middle of the field, for the same reason.
Now I still mow the same way, either with the Haybine or the side mounted sickle. I generally leave a wide backswath with the haybine, back cut it and then trim the extra with the side mount. That way if I get into any trouble on the very outside, I can dodge or lift over it. The side mount makes it much easier to see what I am hitting.
If you don’t mow right out to the fence, the brush grows up, followed by trees, then some lazy slob sets the fence over, and you wind up with a forty foot fence row.
