Perfectly timed topic, as I wanted to ask the same question. When we mowed with the JD 1010 and 7 foot number 9, it was concentric circles all the way in. I can't remember how my elders started the field, but suspect back cut was left until later. I do remember to hang the threaded rod that holds the cutter bar in vertical position from the rain gutter on the barn rather than taking it to the field lest you hit it by mistake (not me, my cousin).
I used to love the look of a farmer's operation East of here- he grew seed oats- and I realized that he kept the edges of all his fields mowed like lawn. Since I have more time than smarts, I now mow a border around all my fields with the lawn mower (72" cut) and it sure looks nice.
It was big enough to start the field from with my older sickle-bar conditioner, no back cut needed. Not enough for upgraded disc mower and required bigger tractor, hence my need for these answers. I have been starting the second round and back cutting the outside round immediately, with fair to poor results. I will be trying to leave the back cut for last with the next field, just as soon as I get this PTO mounted on the pontoon boat, so I can pull the mower...
