There are a lot of IF's as to why you are usen a lot of gas, It all revolves around what shape the engine is in . Do you have blow by ???? when was the last time the valves were set , this is not a car or pick up engine with hyd . lifters they need adjusted every so often and this can cause and engine not to have the power and economy that it should have . Engine ing. timing has and affect , now not a total guru on the fords here but don't they have a vac advance on them ?? if that is not working correctly due to being froze up or a ruptured diafram (sp) this will affect fuel use and power , stuck flyweights in the dist. also affect power and fuel use. incorrect float setting in the carb , restricted air intake due to a plugged air filter . If the engine is doing aall it can to keep the set RPM then the butterfly in the carb is standing wide open working it's donkey off to maintain set engine speed and will suck more gas in doing so . Under normal operations with a good engine while working the butterfly will run someplace between 1/3 to 1/2 open holding given speed selected BY YOU , when it starts to pull down due to loading then the gov. starts to open the butterfly as needed to maintain preset engine speed till it either achieves the goal or just does not have the power and keeps on going down hill till you either lighten the load or it stalls.
