: I HAVE JUST HAD THE MAGNETO OFF MY 1940 MODEL L REBUILT. I AM REALLY STRUGGLING GETTING THE OLD BOY BACK IN TIME. I DON;T HAVE A MANUAL SO YOU WOULD THINK ONLY TWO CYLINDERS WOULD NOT BE SO BAD.

Welcome to the club. I'm still trying to get my L to fire but think I am getting close. For whatever it is worth, the following instructions were given to me: 1. Remove #1 plug and uncover flywheel cover peephole. 2. Put finger or thumb in #1 cylinder (front) spark plug hole and note when you feel pressure pushing upward-spark marking should on flywheel. Leave at this setting. 3. Hold front of mag with cover off facing you and turn gear counter-clockwise to 10 o'clock position. Impulse should click when doing this. Ignore opening on points that some manuals refer to. 4. Turn gear clockwise to the 8:30 position. 5. Install wire in #1 mag hole and note firing with end of wire near metal case. 6. Install mag holding 8:30 position as close as possible. If it does'nt end up in this position, remove and try again. The helical gears do cause difficulty in doing this. This should get you close and then fine adjustments can be made by looseing the mounting bolts and moving the mag. Good luck.

Today's Featured Article - When Push Comes to Shove - by Dave Patterson. When I was a “kid” (still am to a deree) about two I guess, my parents couldn’t find me one day. They were horrified (we lived by the railroad), my mother thought the worst: "He’s been run over by a train, he’s gone forever!" Where did they find me? Perched up on the seat of the tractor. I’d probably plowed about 3000 acres (in my head anyway) by the time they found me. This is where my love for tractors started and has only gotten worse in my tender 50 yrs on this “green planet”. I’m par ... [Read Article]
