The easiest and safest way will be to find a key. Most Ford tractor keys should fit it.
The next would be to buy an aftermarket switch. It plugs in, not sure how hard to access the switch to replace it, but the electrical just plugs in.
If he really wants to hot wire it, the safest way would be to unplug the switch, make a jumper between the battery terminal and the ignition terminal. Then jump from the battery terminal to the start terminal until it cranks. There may be multiple connections at the switch, so proceed with caution!
