Traditional starter-generators have several inherent problems: 1 - Low cranking power for the size. An MG for a 12 HP Kohler is the same size as a 50's era car generator. Imagine how big one would need to be to crank a 200 HP V8(!) 2 - Very low amp output at speed, and no output at idle. 3 - Abysmal efficiency - mower MG's convert more input shaft energy into heat than into electrical watts. 4 - Intolerant of overspeed. Even a momentary overspeed can "bird nest" the armature windings, trashing the MG. 5 - Expensive (last time I looked a replacement MG for my son's old 12 HP Cub Cadet was over $200). Rebuilds are not cheap either.
