: Just Mag back from rebuilder --- no firing order on engine and I need to know how to time the mag also -----all help appricated -thanks in advance

First, you need to know the rotation of the magneto. It will either be clockwise or counterclockwise. Feel for where the impulse engages. Chances are, if this is a base mount magneto, the impulse is mechanically engaged, so set it and turn the mag. When you get to the point you feel the mag impulse spring, you know you have the right rotation, and that you are going to fire soon. Remove the distribution plate , and determine from where the rotor is pointing what tower is ready to fire. Use this tower as number one. Do all this while the mag is on the bench. Next, remove the spark plugs. Your firing order is either 1243 or 1342. Hopefully, someone who knows these old Cases will respond. Anyway, turn the engine over, or better, have an assistant turn the engine over while you have your finger over the number 1 spark plug hole. Number 1 is always at the front of the engine. When you feel compression, you know you have number 1 cylinder coming up. Turn the motor back slightly, then bolt up the mag. Now, remembering which tower was ready to fire, put the plug wire from the number 1 cylinder in this tower. Then, depending on rotation, move to the next tower and insert the correct plug wire, depending on firing order (someone else needs to help here, I'm not well versed on old Cases), continue inserting wires. Now try the motor. Hopefully, after at least 5 revs you will start. E-mail me if you need more help.
Brian

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
