John Deere M, metal I.D. tag

I am nearing the end of a complete restoration of a 1948 JD M. In the process, I've cleaned all the metal tags on like the starter, generator, distributor etc. My identificaton tag at the starter switch is badly worn and I would like to replace if possible. My dealer says to leave it alone as it will destroy the restoration value if the tag is altered. Is it possible to send the original tag to Deere and get a validated replacement? It isn't a big deal but I wanted to know if anyone else had this experience. Thanks!
