It's FAR more likely there's gear or shift collar wear, or worn/loose transmission bearings.
Plus, hijinks like jumping out of gear on a downhill slope potentially causing a "runaway" were more tolerated back in that era.
HOPE you an figure out what the problem is/make it better, but BE SAFE, having the transmission pop out of gear on a downhill slope is not a GOOD thing, especially on a tractor that never won a "best brakes in the industry" award!
