Yep cost is the big thing . Today a new one tone truck costs more then i paid for a top of the line I H 4300 eagle and a decent 28 foot gooseneck cost hqalf the cost i paid for a custom built East Dump trailer . And like said below Insurance , today i pay more for two cars and a one ton then i did for semi insurance and pulling a Dump trailer was more then say a flat . , then add in fuel and upkeep tires of good quality cost as much as i paid for first line semi tires . I avg. 2 bucks a mile back then and when yopu broke down the cost of operation per mile it came out to 1.13.6 a mile before one dime went into your pocket . I use to haul stuff for people back fifteen years ago and even back then i charged a 1.50 on the round trip or three bucks on the one way , now this was BEFORE the GOv started seeing dollars signs from the little guy that hauled something a couple times a month and before everything over 8 foot 6 inch was OVER SIZED as for us ag equip. up to 10 foot 6 inches as long as you were NOT on the interstate was ok . Then that changed and they wanted a pound of flesh for permits if you were over 8 .6 up to 12 foot after 12 foot ya needed and escort more money . so you go to a sale and by a tractor and the tires set on the deck and do not extend past the rub rail but the rear axles stick out your oversized and legally need a permit flags signs a bubble gum machine blinky lights on the rear of the trailer and Mirrors extending out past the widest part . and people think you should haul it a 150 miles for fifty bucks . I had a Blanket permit for up to 10.6 and the cost was CHEAP for a full year as long as you had the proper insurance and that did not come CHEAP . NOW ya need the DOT junk the CDL the med card IFTA sticker and all the paper work keeping up on miles driven and on what roads in what states and keeping records on the truck and trailer on EVERYTHING you do to it including what you do with the oil after and oil change for the up coming DOT audit that is coming and the fine your GOING to pay as that is a geme then find a consulting firm to PAY to help you get our house in order for the NEXT TIME THEY COME FOR A VISIT , yep once you cross that magic line of 26000lbs you are fair game and it is open season on you and Here is one more little tidbit what about GCVW as MOSt of you are exceeding your GCVW Yea i did also big time as with my 88 Ford F 350 dual rear wheel 4X4 the truck had a 11,000lb GVW but by MFG it had a 18,500 GCVW . The truck light weight was 7500 full of fuel all my junk and my donkey in the seat , my trailer was a tandem dual 28 footer with a 18500 GVW and it weighed in with all chains and binders at OH yea 7500 so now before i loaded anything on it by MFG spec.'s that left me with a 3500 lb load i could haul before i exceeded GCVW . BUT by way of thinking here ya figure oh wait 11000 plus 18500 oh heck i can haul 29500 gross and what the heck i can go a bit more she will take it . Yep she would haul MORE and did so many times . BUT If one would get stopped while doing so and ya ran into one of them WEIGHT WATCHERS that like to play dirty hard ball and he gets the BOOK OUT and yes they have THE BOOK that covers EVERYTHING down to the tire NOW and they usually have EXTRA paper and pens to start writing even if you were at what you THOUGHT you could drag you are now 11000 ov er GCWV and this can really dig into your PIGGY BANK big time like thousands of DOLLARS and the more they dig the higher up the fine goes So lets say your over your GCVW and you are over width due to axles sticking out and your hauling your friends tractor just for gas money your DONE FOR and your doing this on just a reg drivers licenses with no med card no log book no DOT numbers shell i keep on going . Around here at times they are HAMMERING guys with half ton pick ups with loads of fire wood for being over weight . Remember the bears are hungry so don't feed the bears they become dependent one us.
