It was a cartridge filter for the frame mounted water separator / filter, the bump in the filters metal cap isn't right in the newer cartridge for the older late 80's Kubota compact tractor for an unknown reason. Can update to newer separator or change filter housing types to a generic one.
I ran into this in my boat as well, the top of the line Raycor water separator from 1998 wouldn't take any current cartridges so changed to a newer spin on filter base.
