I've read them all, including The Silmarillion, several times over the past 45 years. Tolkien's imagination amazes me. If you want to fill in the blanks and learn the "history" behind it all, you have to read The Silmarrilion. Tolkien's son published it after his father's death from notes and manuscripts that were never assembled and published.
I enjoyed all the Lord of the Rings movies and found them to basically follow the books except for a few exceptions. I also enjoyed the Hobbit movies for what they were but I was disappointed as a "purest" by everything the screen writers added to the story.
