Sudden stall would lead me to suspect ignition failure. Fuel problem would likely spit and sputter before dying. Does choking make a difference?
Check your points. Don't use the cheap ones that often come in a kit.
Check your ignition switch
Wiring diagram shows a light green wire coming from Key start switch, through a big plug connector, then joins with a white/orange/purple wire to the ignition coil. My brother has a 574 and has had problems with connections in the plug.
The tractor originally had an "external resistor required coil" and the white/orange/purple wire is a resistance wire.
An "external resistor required" coil should have about 1 1/2 ohms across the + and - posts. A direct 12 volt "no resistor" coil should have about 3 ohms. If signiticantly more that that the coil has failed. Simple test equipment can tell if a coil is bad, but can not tell for sure that it is good.

And, if you are like me, your tractor is under cover, but it sits outside. So with every temperature change, the humidity in the air collects in the fuel tank, in the form of water.
