I have an IH 254 4wd and a tandem axle trailer. The entire rig weighs in at about 3,000 pounds. That is well within the towing capacity of my Dodge Dakota V8. Your rig may be a little heavier but well within the towing capacity of your truck. I loaded mine up and took it around the neighborhood without brakes. Not something I recommend. If this is something you are going to do once, your cheapist out may be renting a suitable trailer with self contained hydraulic breaks. Not as smooth as electric breaks but no need to install a control unit and wiring. Fourty miles does not sound like much and you may be tempted to creep down late at night. Don't do it.
