Beans can be so deceiving. You don’t know what you have until the combine has left the fieldin the fall. I’m not familiar with how tall the beans grow in your neck of the woods but here in Iowa beans that grow that tall won’t yield the best. They would be all vine and few pods. A short plant with pod groups one inch apart might yield as well as a real tall plant with pod group two or three inches apart. Beans that are up to my pants pockets or maybe my waist are about as tall as I like to see them grow here in northern Iowa. What we are looking for is the amount of pods. The old timers used to say one pod per bushel was the rule. 50 pods equals 50 bushels per acre yield. That rule varies depending on population though. Next time you are near that field count the amount of pods on one plant. Check several plants because the count can vary. Three beans per pod is a good average count. Two beans is a little disappointing and four beans per pod is terrific.
