220 degrees isn't too hot for an MT. My M never gets below that if she's working. Been that way for the last 40 years.
Just to be safe there are a few things to check. Wash the chaff off the radiator. Check the belt tension. Check ignition timing with a light. Should see SPARK in the center of the timing window at full throttle with the lead on the front plug wire. Make sure the muffler isn't obstructed. Last and the MOST important is to run a 50/50 mix of antifreeze that is PREMIXED. If it isn't you will have hot spots in the engine that could gall a piston or crack a head. If I remember correctly the premixed antifreeze will not boil under 235 degrees. Remember there is no water pump to circulate the antifreeze.
