I have 90's vintage 4 kw Coleman at our summer cottage. It was was struck by lightning and disabled about 15 years ago. It fried everything inside the end bell - circuit breakers, receptacles, a pair of diodes, a capacitor and the brushes.
Replacement circuit breakers and receptacles I found at the local hardware. Radio Shack had suitable diodes and the capacitor. And I was able to match the shattered brushes at the local starter/alternator shop.
I polished the slip rings, then put it all back together and reflashed the field; the generator has been working like a champ ever since.
So aside from the rotor and the stator - which mine survived a lightning strike(!) - pretty much everything that can go wrong inside the generator (including the needle bearing) is available generically. I'd not be too concerned.
