It's easier to just push high on tree and it will snap off most of the roots. You could them dig them out or put a chain around tree and pull out the tree and roots.

I turned in an old 18 inch electric chainsaw into a stump cutter. You are stand up when using it. Cuts stumps off level with ground. Saves your knees or and back. I'll have to post a pic of it later. I power it with portable 3500 watt champion.
