Human global population WILL be regulated, one way or another.
The blue ball will eventually reach its human carrying capacity, and after that the regulation will be enforced by nature, not by man. I will go out on a very short limb and say that IF we allow the natural method of reducing human population - it will not be nice, nor pretty, nor fun.
I will also opine that once nature takes its course in reducing human population, the lower economic, and lower cultural states(countries, regions) will be hit with excruciating harsh reduction. i.e. - If one lives in central China, or central or N Africa, or the interior of India(as they stand today) one will have a very rough time of it. At some point, nations will stop giving/selling their resources to places of famine or pestilence or disease, as they will need to look out for their own state needs first.
ZPG is one of the most onerous discussions we can have as a planet. Pretty much every nations has some form of 'you first' mentality about it. The US might be stagnant on births, but that doesn't mean we aren't growing our population, as we import far more people than other nations.
I've heard ball park numbers of human carrying capacity tossed around at 12-24 billion. Maybe if we get very creative, we can up that to 30 billion.
The most important thing to know is this; World population in 1800 ~.94 billion. In 1900 ~ 1.65 billion. In 2000 ~6 billion. Scary when graphed. Again - we need to fix it, or nature surely will.
