: Since most new tractors are diesel, why were gas : tractors produced in the 60's and 70's when : comparable diesels models were available? : Why did many people purchase the gas models? David, I agree with both Steve and Indian Guy. Especially Indian Guy when he said he remembered being young and good looking! The old I get the better I was also. Another point in the diesel/gas conversation was that diesel fuel was not only a little higher and harder to get sometimes back then, but folks were not used to keeping a fuel as clean as diesel fuel had to be kept. And you are right saying diesels were available back then in the 70's or so, but as Steve and Indian Guy pointed out, they were pretty troublesome in some ways compared to gas, especially the starting deal as they mentioned. Also, in some cases the same model diesel tractor didn't have quite the horses of the comparable gas model. But remember one thing, everywhere an engine has got to "grab a root and growl" such as big trucks, heavy construction machinery, continuous running power units or barge tug boats, it will be a diesel. Everything else equal, they last longer and will still be bringing home the bacon when their gas counterparts have long since given up. Have a good day sir. John
